Dr. Ian Irvine

Ian Irvine has a B.Sc. in Microbiology and an M.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering from University College London. Ian’s D.Phil. in computer modelling of batch processes, is from Sussex University. Ian is a member of the Biochemical Engineering Subject Group of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and has been a member of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling since 1972.

Ian has worked in the food and pharmaceutical industries since 1968 in research, management and consultancy roles. Since 1988 he has worked as a consultant in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries mainly in the areas of software validation, software and biotech project management and control systems. He is possibly unique in having designed, inter alia, an automated warm water prawn hatchery; it should be noted that he declined the opportunity of building the the hatchery in the mangrove swamps of central America.

Ian has an ongoing role of advising academic institutions on undergraduate and post-graduate course structures and course content. These institutions include University College London, Warwick University (where he was appointed a Visiting Fellow), the University of Surrey, the University of Sussex and the University of Exeter.

Ian's interests are travelling, hill walking and cycling in Surrey (where he has lived for more than 30 years), rugby (which he hasn't played for more than 30 years), looking after elderly cats, detective fiction from an earlier age (Arthur Conan-Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Francis Durbridge), listening to that anachronism the radio and finally fine wines and cooking.
